As a career member of the Senior Executive Service (SES), Joe Ferrara held numerous positions within the Department of Defense (DOD). He is a three-time recipient of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Civilian Service and a former Presidential Management Fellow. Ferrara now serves as Associate Dean of the Georgetown Public Policy Institute, where he directs the university's Executive Master of Policy Management program. You joined the Senior Executive Service at age 36. What advice do you have for young federal leaders who aspire to such a role? Number one, when there's an opportunity to step into a leadership role, take it. Push yourself. Get into a new area that you haven't dealt with before.
