Paul Abbate to Lead FBI Counterterrorism Division in Washington

FBI director Robert S. Mueller III announced Wednesday that the bureau has appointed Paul M. Abbate as its new special agent in charge of the Washington field office’sĀ counterterrorism division.
Abbate began serving the FBI in 1996 at the New York Field Office and was most recently in charge of extraterritorial terrorism investigations.
In 2003, Abbate joined the counterterrorism division at the FBI headquarters and began performing counterterrorism and counterintelligence investigations.
He has held various other field and supervisory roles, specializing in counterterrorism operations.
Over the course of his career, he has served in additional FBI offices in Los Angeles, Afghanistan, New Jersey and Washington.
